How do I measure for an RV shower pan replacement?

Measure the outside length and width of your existing pan at the flange, then record the drain position (center, left, or right) as the distance from the drain center to the back and side walls. Note the threshold height and drain diameter too. Common RV shower pan footprints include 24 in. x 32 in., 24 in. x 36 in., 32 in. x 32 in., and 36 in. x 36 in., but an off-by-one-inch pan will not sit flat or seal against your existing surround. Can I replace my RV bathtub with a shower pan?

In many rigs, yes, as long as the shower pan footprint matches the tub opening and the drain lines up with your existing plumbing. The wall surround also needs to cover the gap left by the taller tub apron, which is why a matching surround is usually part of the job. If you are going the other way and adding an RV bathtub, check your hot water supply first: a tub draws more hot water than a short shower, and a 10 gallon RV water heater gives you more capacity than a 6 gallon tank.

What are RV shower pans and bathtubs made of?

Most RV shower pans and tubs are ABS plastic or fiberglass. ABS is lighter and has slight flex, which helps it handle chassis movement on the road. Fiberglass is stiffer and holds its finish well over time, though it adds weight. Either material needs solid support underneath; a pan that flexes over a gap in the subfloor is the most common cause of cracking. Clean both with non-abrasive cleaners to protect the surface.

Is camper shower replacement a DIY job?

For most owners with basic tools, yes. The usual steps are removing the surround trim and screws, disconnecting the drain, lifting out the old pan, checking the subfloor for water damage, and setting the new pan in a bed of support with fresh sealant at the drain and walls.
