What do I need to flat tow a vehicle behind my motorhome?

A complete flat tow setup has five parts: the tow bar, a base plate bolted to the towed vehicle's frame, safety cables, a wiring kit so the towed vehicle's brake and turn lights follow the motorhome, and a supplemental braking system. The base plate is specific to the towed vehicle's year, make, and model and is usually sold separately from the RV tow bar, so confirm it is compatible with your tow bar brand before ordering. Also check the towed vehicle's owner's manual to confirm it can be flat towed with all four wheels down. Plan to hook up and unhook on flat ground. How do I choose the right RV tow bar capacity?

The tow bar's rated capacity must be equal to or greater than the loaded weight of the vehicle you are towing. Next, check your motorhome's hitch receiver rating and its maximum towing capacity. The lowest of the three ratings is your actual limit. Most motorhome tow bars connect to a 2" receiver. The tow bar should sit close to level between the motorhome and the towed vehicle, generally within about 3". If the receiver and base plate heights differ by more than that, you will need a drop or rise adapter.

Do I need a supplemental braking system with my motorhome tow bar?

In most cases, yes. A tow bar connects the vehicles but does not brake the towed vehicle. Most states require supplemental braking once the towed vehicle exceeds a set weight. Those thresholds vary by state and province, so check the rules for every state on your route. A supplemental braking system is a different product from the drum brakes on a towable RV. Should I buy a used RV tow bar?

A used tow bar can work, but inspect it before you buy.
