How do I know if my RV slide out motor needs replacement?

Common signs are a slide that moves slower than normal, one end lagging behind the other, a motor that clicks or hums without moving the room, or a slide that stops partway. Before you replace an RV slide out motor, check your 12V supply. Slide motors draw heavy current, and a weak battery or failing converter produces the same slow, stalling symptoms as a worn motor. Test battery voltage with the slide under load. If it drops well below 12V, look at the battery or a replacement from our 55 amp RV power converters first.

How do I find the right motor for an RV or motorhome slide out motor replacement?

Start with the label on your existing motor. The part number, gear ratio, and RPM rating must match, because a motor with the wrong ratio can run your room out of sync or overload the controller. Next, confirm your slide system type: in-wall systems such as Lippert Schwintek, rack-and-pinion through-frame systems, or cable-driven systems each use different motors. The process is the same for a motorhome slide out motor replacement and a travel trailer or fifth wheel. If the label is missing or unreadable, text or call 817-984-1852 with your RV's make, model, and year and we'll confirm the correct motor before you order.

Can I replace an RV slide out motor myself?

Yes. Most owners with basic hand tools and a multimeter can replace an RV slide out motor. On in-wall systems the motors are accessed along the slide room's side columns, usually behind trim. On through-frame systems the motor mounts under the coach near the slide mechanism. Disconnect the battery before starting, support the room so it can't drift, and photograph the wiring before you remove the old motor. Some slide controllers need a reset or relearn procedure after a motor change, so check the controller instructions before your first test run.

Do I need to replace the slide out controller when I replace the motor?

Not usually. The controller reads motor current, keeps dual-motor in-wall systems synchronized, and stops the room at the end of its travel. If one motor tests good with direct 12V power but the slide still throws error codes or refuses to move, the controller is the more likely fault. Replace only the part that tests bad. Controllers depend on steady 12V power, so a failing converter can cause erratic behavior. Our 25 amp RV power converters cover smaller rigs with lighter 12V loads. A Southwire Surge Guard RV surge protector helps protect the converter from shore power spikes.

How much does RV slide out motor replacement cost?

The motor is the main parts cost, and current pricing is listed on each product in this collection. If you hire a shop, labor is the larger variable. In-wall motors behind interior trim and through-frame motors under the coach can take very different amounts of time to reach. Doing the job yourself removes the labor charge. Ordering the correct part number the first time avoids a second shipment and a second teardown.
