What size RV waste valve do I need?

Most RV waste valves come in two sizes: 3" for the black tank line and 1-1/2" for the gray tank line, though some RVs use a 3" valve on the gray tank as well. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe at the valve, then check how your current valve connects. Bolt-on valves mount between two flanges with four bolts, while glue-in and spigot styles bond directly to ABS pipe. Before ordering, note the handle type (standard pull handle, cable-operated, or electric) so the replacement matches your existing setup.

Can I do an RV dump valve replacement myself?

Yes. Replacing a bolt-on RV dump valve is a straightforward DIY repair with basic hand tools. Empty and flush both holding tanks first, and keep a bucket under the valve for leftover water. Remove the four flange bolts, slide out the old valve, and install the new valve with fresh seals on both sides. Tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern and stop when snug, because overtightening can crack the flange. If you are unsure which valve fits your RV, text or call 817-984-1852 with your RV make, model, and a photo of the existing valve.

Why is my RV sewer gate valve leaking or hard to pull?

The usual causes are dried-out seals, debris lodged against the gate blade, or a bent handle stem. A sticky gate valve sometimes frees up after a thorough tank flush and a dose of RV-specific valve lubricant. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, which can degrade the rubber seals. If waste leaks past the closed blade or around the flange, the seals are worn, and replacing the valve is the reliable fix. Water left in a valve body during freezing weather can crack it, so drain both holding tanks completely before storage and drain your 10 gallon RV water heater at the same time.

Should I leave the black tank gate valve open at a full hookup site?

No. Keep the black tank valve closed until the tank is at least two-thirds full, then open it so the volume of liquid carries solids out. Leaving it open lets liquids drain while solids build up in the tank. The gray tank valve can stay open at full hookups, but close it a day before you dump the black tank so you have gray water to rinse the sewer hose afterward. Parking level on Lynx RV leveling blocks helps both tanks drain fully through the valves.
